Colbert Super Pac |
ABC News reports Colbert's political action committee -- Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow -- has bought nearly $10,000 of airtime in South Carolina, which holds its primary on Jan. 21.
Colbert last night transferred control of his super PAC to his friend and fellow Comedy Central host, Jon Stewart, and said he formed a presidential exploratory committee. Colbert riffed that he's trying to lay the groundwork to run for "president of the United States of South Carolina." (He's a Palmetto State native.)
The ad buy is on a Charleston-area broadcast station sometime between Sunday and Thursday next week, a "source tracking ad buys in early primary states" tells ABC News.
Palmetto State Record, a blog about politics and policy in South Carolina, reports that it has "exclusively learned" that Colbert's super PAC is "negotiating a substantial media buy in the Columbia (TV) market."
It remains to be seen what, exactly, Colbert and Stewart are up to. But there's no question that Colbert has been putting the spotlight on the influence of campaign money with his political action committee, which was created in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling in the Citizens United case.
In that decision, the high court said corporations and unions could no longer be banned from paying for ads that explicitly call for the election or defeat of a federal candidate.
As the Palmetto State Record wrote:
Given how expensive commercial airtime is during the primary season, the fact that Colbert would shell out enough money for TV ads can only mean one thing — he's got something big planned.A mock news release on the super PAC's website says Colbert's group is now "under new management" and was "handed down" to Stewart "like a pair of old dungarees."
Stewart has a note on the site, too: "Does anybody know where the key to the Super PAC bathroom is?" he asks.
