Because there aren't enough awards show this time of year, the Critics Choice Awards aired on Thursday night (don't worry, everyone else was watching the season premiere of "30 Rock" too), and -- surprise -- gave out trophies to all the people who have been winning trophies during the last month!
Silent film "The Artist" took home four awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius, Best Costumes, and -- in news that will make Kim Novak pretty upset -- Best Score.
Next in line was "The Help," which won honors for Viola Davis (Best Actress), Octavia Spencer (Best Supporting Actress) and Best Ensemble.
"The two most important days in a person's life are the day you were born and the day you discover why you were born," Davis said during her acceptance speech. "I considered it my honor to pay homage to these women at this time period who were not allowed to dream and not allowed to find their purpose but thank God, praise God they gave birth to me and my mother."
Other acting winners included George Clooney ("The Descendants") and Christopher Plummer ("Beginners"). While you might scoff at the notion of critics having power over anything relating to movies and awards season -- after all, all the critics heaped deserved praise onto "The Social Network" over "The King's Speech" this time last year and look how that turned out -- there is some history. The Critics Choice Awards have gone four-for-four in the acting categories during the last two years, meaning Clooney, Davis (over Meryl Streep), Spencer and Plummer should keep practicing those speeches.
