Actor Matthew McConaughey proposed to his longtime girlfriend and the mother of his two children, Camila Alves, on Christmas Day.

McConaughey announced the happy news on Twitter, writing: “Just asked camila to marry me, #merry Christmas.” He also posted a picture of the two kissing in front of their Christmas tree on his WhoSay account.

Alves, 29, is a Brazilian model, actress and TV host, met the 42-year-old star at a Los Angeles bar in 2006. She was the host of season three of “Shear Genius,” a hair styling reality show, and has her own handbag line, MUXO on QVC. Prices for the homemade handbags range from $212 to $1800.

The couple’s first child, son Levi Alves McConaughey, was born in 2008, and daughter Vida Alves McConaughey followed in 2010.

In 2008 the “Dazed and Confused” actor told People that Avles was “the love of my life.”

“We’re a family now,” he told the magazine shortly after his son Levi was born. “I see the future and it’s clearer to me now. Walking around with this cool responsibility all the time, it’s a wonderful thing.”

Last March he confirmed that his feelings hadn’t changed in an interview with GQ. “I found the woman I wanna do it with, the woman I wanna make a family with, hopefully live out life out together,” he said. “She needs to have 50 percent of that. I mean, it’s a lot easier for me to be at 100 percent. I’d always been 100 percent. It’s braver for me at 50 percent.”

The family split its time between Austin, Texas and Malibu, Florida.

The often shirtless actor’s next film will be “Magic Mike,” which follows the adventures of male strippers and also stars former stripper Channing Tatum.
